The 2nd Annual St. Louis Kosher Barbecue Competition and Festival will be held at Nusach Hari B’nai Zion in Olivette on Sunday, June 25th, 2017 from 12-4pm.
Following up on last year’s very successful event which attracted about 500 attendees, this year’s event promises to be bigger and improved. “Our first year was a blast, but we definitely learned some things so attendees should still expect a even greater event for the entire Jewish community,” explained event Chair Mindy Woolf. This year will feature more food, more kid’s activities, more parking and more seating! (We weren’t exactly expecting 500 last year!)
Not just some back yard BBQ, St. Louis’foray into Kosher Barbecue Competition aims for a high degree of professionalism as an officially sanctioned BBQ Competition event. The St. Louis’s Kosher Barbecue is officially sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbecue Association (KCBS). “And KCBS was so impressed by our first competition that the KCBS representatives asked to be invited back,” explained Woolf. KCBS is 20,000 members strong, sanctions more than 450 contests a year across the U.S.A., Canada, the Caribbean, and in Europe, has certified more than 26,000 judges, and is considered the gold standard in the competition barbecue world! It is also the largest organization of cooking contests in the world. Because this is a Kosher Barbecue competition, all teams will purchase meat and use grills, smokers and utensils provided by NHBZ. The event will be under the Kashrut supervision of Rabbi Ze’ev Smason.
In addition to the attraction of the fierce competitors, there will be sponsor booths, tasting booths, kid activities, live music, and more. This family oriented community wide event will be sure to bring people together for a fun filled afternoon. After all, who doesn’t like barbecue?!?!
Sponsorships for this event are also available to allow businesses and organizations to reach out through the multiple sponsorship opportunities. Various Levels are available and all sponsors will be prominently recognized in printed materials including advertisements throughout the community, on websites and social media along with banners at the event.

Like last year’s event, this year’s event will allow for a limited number of competing Teams. Teams can enter representing community organizations, synagogues or temples, Men’s Clubs, sisterhoods, neighborhoods, families, or just a collection of friends. Some teams choose a theme, and show up in costumes and decorate their table. (There is no rule that teams have to dress up or decorate. Teams can just come and cook. But much of the fun lies in the creativity of the teams – and there are some zany teams!) All participants should keep in mind that this is a family event that is intended to be welcoming to a diverse group. NHBZ reserves its right, at its sole discretion, to prohibit or otherwise restrict any activity, decoration, or material. Teams are encouraged to register early as space is limited.
