Fast of the Tenth of Teves

Asara B’Tevet for the Hebrew Year 5782 occurs at dawn on .

The fast commemorates three calamities that occurred during Jewish history on the tenth of Teves and the two days preceding it:

  1. The siege of the First Temple by Nebuchadnezzar and the Babylonians.
  2. The translation of the Torah into Greek, ordered by Egyptian King Ptolemy, during the Second Temple period.
  3. The death of Ezra the Scribe, great Jewish leader who returned the Jewish people to Israel following the Babylonian exile.
