Sisterhood Book Club News

Author David Kertzer answering questions from Dr. Marie Griffith, director of the John C. Danforth Center on Religion and Politics
On March 27 several members of the NHBZ Sisterhood Book Club attended a Washington University lecture presented by the John C. Danforth Center on Religion and Politics featuring Pulitzer Prize-winning author David Kertzer about his new book The Pope at War: The Secret History of Pius XII, Mussolini, and Hitler. The lecture, sponsored by the Michael and Barbara Newmark Institute for Human Relations at JCRC, the St. Louis Kaplan Feldman Holocaust Museum, and the St. Louis Jewish Book Festival, among others, revealed the myths and falsehoods surrounding the controversial Pope Pius XII and the actions of the Church from 1939 to 1945. In 2019 the Book Club read an earlier book by Kertzer, The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara, about the Vatican’s imprisonment of a Jewish boy in 1858.
